Whether you enjoy a gentle stroll or a challenging hill climb, there’s a vast range of landscapes here to explore. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose from adrenalin-pumping adventures to more leisurely pursuits
Walking
There are many walks to discover, either straight from the door or a short drive away. From discovering sandy beaches and rocky coves, to heading into the hills to explore the Galloway Forest Park.
Venture up Criffel and Screel to be rewarded with breath-taking panoramic views across the Solway Firth that go on for miles. On a clear day you can even see the Lake District from the top.
Discover the Range of the Awful Hand. A chain of 5 hills within Galloway Forest Park. It includes Merrick, the highest summit in Southern Scotland which is a favourite with hillwalkers.
Cycling & mountain biking
Whether you like touring the area on two wheels or enjoy the thrill of off-road forest trails, Dumfries and Galloway has lots of fantastic cycling routes. From Chapelton Cottages you could cycle along the roads and do a loop into Kircudbright around to Borgue and back. There are more route suggestions over on Komoot.
For mountain biking, explore some of the 7stanes trail centres. The closest are Kirkcudbright and Kirroughtree. But Dalbeattie, Mabie, Ae Forest and Glentrool are all just a drive away.
Bike hire is available from Wheels of Fleet in Gatehouse and William Law in Kirkcudbright.
Fishing
If fishing is your hobby, there is lots of choice nearby. Guests can enjoy salmon, trout, coarse and sea fishing. Brighouse Bay is one of four fishing beaches listed in Dumfries and Galloway along with Sandeel Bay, Portlogan Bay and Cockle Shore Beach in Stranraer.
Galloway Forest Park also has some stunning calm waters where you can fish for trout and salmon between March and September and pike, perch, tench and rudd all year round. The nearest place to buy permits is Kirroughtree Visitor Centre.
Water sports
There are ample opportunities for wild swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and more from Brighouse Bay or any of the sandy beaches along this stretch of coast. But if you would like to hire equipment or learn a new skill head up the road to the Galloway Activity Centre.
Golfing
As well as Brighouse Bay, there’s a number of golf courses in the local area. Including Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse. If you want to bring a group of friends on a golfing holiday, Dunrod sleeps up to 10 guests and is the perfect base.
Horse riding
Being in such a spectacular location, setting off on horseback is a fantastic way to see the area. Barstobick Riding Centre offers trekking around their private 650-acre estate.
